Nestled in the heart of County Louth, Ardee is one of those towns that surprises you.

A bustling market town with thriving shops, pubs and restaurants ... but look a little closer and you'll find two medieval castles on the same street, an epic mythological battle site and a church that, legend has it, literally jumped.

Ardee Castle, built in the 1400s, is the largest surviving fortified medieval tower house in Ireland. Right across the road, Hatch's Castle stands just as proud. And if Irish mythology is your thing, this is where Cúchulainn and Ferdia fought their legendary four-day battle on the banks of the River Dee.

In the 1670s, St. Oliver Plunkett lived and ministered in Ballybarrack, on the outskirts of Dundalk. In a humble thatched home, he ordained priests, gathered his flock and kept the faith alive during one of the most turbulent periods in Irish history.

The tiny church at Ballybarrack was his sanctuary. No pillars, no spires. Just faith, community and quiet resilience. In 1975, he became the first new Irish saint in nearly 700 years. 🙏

Did you know you can still visit the shrine today? Come and walk in the footsteps of a saint, right here in County Louth.
